The
Hudson Valley Singers gave their debut concert on March 15, 1951, at the
Graham School in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. The group, now 73 members
strong, has been in existence continuously since that time, performing choral
music of the 17th through 20th centuries.
The
group's objectives have always been to contribute to the cultural life
of the community through our public performances and to provide our amateur
choral singers with professional instruction.
In1998,
Eugene Sirotkine joined the Hudson Valley
Singers as Music Director and brought a very special vitality and enthusiasm
to the group.
Overheard at rehearsal...
Carol (alto):
Weve all grown so much as musicians since Eugene took
the helm here four years ago. Performing some of the the finest choral
music ever written with world-class soloists like Olga Makarina and
Peter Volpe is a feeling I cant even begin to describe.
Eugene:
When I told the Met chorus that I was doing Gira la cote
from Puccinis Turandot with my Hudson Valley Chorus, they were
amazed that an amateur ensemble would attempt a piece even they find
challenging. It was truly marvelous.
Last
winter the Hudson Valley Singers performed Mozart's Requiem Mass (K.626)
and Vesperae Solennes (K.339). The Spring 2002 program consisted of Opera
Choruses and Arias from Bellini, Giordano, Mozart, Puccini, Rossini and
Verdi.
The
Spring 2003 program will feature Johann Sebastian
Bach's St. John Passion. It will be performed, fittingly enough, on
Palm Sunday, April 13th, so save the date.
On January 19th:
Mozart's C Minor Mass
We're
so excited about taking on Wolfgang Mozart's most difficult choral piece.
Rehearsals began in September and will go on right up to the afternoon
of January 19th. So save the date.
And
